Radio Noticias Peru On our camous in Trujillo, Peru, we helped found and have partly sponsored a radio station dedicated to difusing news about and for street people: people too poor to have a house, TV or telephone, who rely on cheap portable radios to know what is happening in the world, and what help is available to them, and where to go to receive it.
SKIP - (Supporting Kids in Peru) This is a project we started in one of the barrios of Trujillo, sending our social workers and international volunteers out into one of the poorest and most dangerous barrios of the city (a 45 minute bus ride from the city center). Its mission is to get child laborers and very poor children into school - including sponsoring their enrollment fees, school uniforms and supplies; even helping their mothers to start up micro enterprises so the children will not have to work to support the family. It has been so successful that another charity has taken it on, and they continue to help dozens of poor children and their families.
Shelter Nicole DÁmecourt At what is now our campus in the center of Trujillo we began a shelter for abused, very poor and/or adabdoned childre in 2001. We did this because there are many such children in Trujillo, and just giving them free meals, clothes and classes did not seem enough. We continued to house these children, including eight teenage orphans, until it became evident that our open facility was not suitable to serving both children who came in from the street for the day and children who lived there - because the resident children were continually re-exposed to the vices and addictions of the street children. So we transferred the orphans to a closed facility and transformed the shelter into more classes and facilities for the project we now operate to help poor and street children get educated. Since closing the shelter in favor of our present program we have discovered that we are able to make a greater difference in the lives of more children than when we operated as a shelter.
